Why the printer will be slowing down?

after 18 months printer stopped working. When I try to reinstall the drivers, it tells me files are missing - specifically "failed dll-pdpinst"

Compaq sent directions that don't make sense. I managed to get it work once by following some of the instructions, but suddenly stopped again.

Everything is connected. CPU runs fine. But as soon as I access a printer file, like properties of the printer, the whole system slows way down.

Anything you can suggest?

Try turning the computer off and then on after one minute and see if that works, other wise you might need more resources and or memory installed in your computer.
