I recently purchased Norton Internet security 2003. It works great - found 3 viruses on a fresh system install. Trouble is system resources. 81% before Norton, 66% after. Both readings on boot-up. This makes some large programs or multiple programs hard to run.

1. Would Norton Anti-Virus or McAfee Anti-virus be a better choice?

2. Are there any anti-virus programs available which would run on an old Pentium 75 Toshiba Laptop?

Here's a free anti-virus: http://download.com.com/3000-2239-10176761.html?tag=lst-0-6 I don't know how fast it runs, but should be faster than Norton's

Also try this free one: http://www.grisoft.com/

Another option is free online scans, such as: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

In my experience I found McAfee to be faster and easier to use than Norton, and took up less space and memory This might have changed by now as I use an ancient version.
