I know that my dell 550's motherboard supports up to a 1 ghz PIII. I'm wondering what will happen if I put in a faster processor like a 1.1 or 1.2ghz. Would it fry or would it just not not run to its full potential?

If your motherboard only support up to 1GHZ PIII, then a CPU of higher speed will not work on your motherboard CPU when installed on a motherboard are determined by their socket size.

Verify this info with your motherboards paperwork.
