What is connect mouse with Windows XP?

Mouse was very jerky even after cleaning. I bought a new one (labtec) but whenever I turn the computer on it gives a message box stating the system does not detect a mouse. The mouse is connected as the light is on. It does state on the box - works with Windows XP - does this mean it only works with Windows XP or should it work with Windows 98 aswell.

Any help would be appreciated.

The drivers are only designed to work with Windows XP Contact the manufacturer to see if they have drivers for Windows 98
