My cable modem (Surfboard) has a standby switch. I leave my computer on all the time and put it into hibernation when I am not using it. But, I put the cable modem on standby and disconnect the communication link -- except when I am at my computer.

I am presuming that the less time I am connected to the network, the less chance there is of hackers and viruses. Is this true? I don't like to feel that my computer is connected to the world when I am not around?

Am I safer?

The answer to your question is that its true the less time your computer is connected to the internet the less vulnerable to hackers or viruses...Invest in purchasing a Firewall program or Norton Virus protection..any added protection is always helpful.
