I installed a Best Data 56FWPCI modem from an old computer into a different computer that I intended to use. The installation appeared to go normally (downloaded the drivers from Best Data), but when I attempted to use the modem I got a "cannot find Wave Device for Voice Modem" message. What do I do?

On the Windows desktop, right-click and point at New and then click on Folder, A folder called New Folder will be created

Download all of the files to the folder New Folder.

Locate the file ess-audio--modem.exe in the folder New Folder, and double-click it

This will open the WinRar self-extracting archive, it is already set to extract to the Windows Desktop folder, so just click Extract.

This will create the file XL2audio.exe file Double-click this file

Read the instructions and click OK, and on the next window click the Unzip.

When it finishes extracting the files to the c:\ess directory click OK

Click Next, click on the Uninstall Drivers option and click Next On the next window click Finish, and the unit will restart Windows.

Instructions for installing the audio and modem driver:

You will see a new hardware found and it will show PCI Multimedia Audio Device Click Next, and click Next again

Remove the check from Floppy disks and put a check in "Specify a location:" In the box type c:\ess and click Next It will show it has found the c:\ess\maestro.inf Click Next, and Windows will copy the files it needs When this is complete, click Finish

It will then find the Ess Device Manager, click Next, click Next and click Next, then when it shows ESS Device Manager is installed so click Finish.

Windows will then find and install several devices requiring no action on your part.

It will then find an "Unknown Device", click Next, and click Next The specify a location box should already have c:\ess, so click Next, and click Next

Windows will stop and say it cannot find the file "_inst32ex_" on the Windows CD There is a copy files from box Change the location to c:\ess, and click OK It will install the ESS ES56CVH-Pl Data Fax Voice Modem, click Finish.

Windows will then find the Wave Device for Voice Modem, click Next.and Next again C:\ess should already be in the specify a location box, so click Next, and Next again Click Finish on the next window

The installation of the modem is complete.
