My computer will not boot up. What should I do?

When i turn my computer on, the system doesnt boot. the screen is black. the computer pyshically turnes on, ie, the lights turn on and the fans start to run. the green power light is on in the front, but the red light (re-boot button) wont stay on as it does when the sytem is booting or being used. I have noticed that the inner workings of the computer heat up very quickly once the unit is turned on...can this be the problem? Please help me, my life is on that computer! (i am a college student) thanks

Try using a startup disk if you don't have follow these instructions

Create the disk using the control panel.

1) Open the Control Panel

2) Double Click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon to open it.

3) Click the "Startup Disk" tab on the top right corner of the window

4) click the "Create Disk...: button
