What is an e-mail?

I use 'outlook express' as my email provider.When i click on my outlook icon I am then asked to click 'connect' to dial up. Once i am connected, my computer freezes & I have to press 'ctrl, alt & delete' Up pops a window that asks me to 'end task' which i do. [remember i am connected].Once I have done this I am back to my desktop, so I click the outlook icon again & my emails come in no problem! Why does it freeze up in the first place? Thank you.
