Can I re-install Win98 with no harm to be done to WinXP?

My question is: Can I re-install Win98 with no harm to be done to WinXP? Somebody told me that, if I reinstall win98, I have to do so with XP too, because it overwrites que MBR, but I don't know if it's true.
