Is there a way to set the color feature to a higher color such as 256 or 16(high) or 32 color?

My PC has a standard PCI VGA Graphic Card. I'm using an IBM color monitor (G52). I purchased a MAVIS Typing program that requires a setting of 256 color or 16(high) color. I attempted to change the setting in order to use the program but the setting reads only 16 color. Is there a way to set the color feature to a higher color such as 256 or 16(high) or 32 color? Please help.
