There is a way to introduce one more processor and distribute the work load to both for getting better performance ?

I am using AMD Duron 1.2ghz. I wonder whether there is a way to introduce one more processor and distribute the work load to both for getting better performance I mean in a single PC itself. I prefer the second processor to be AMD ATHlon. Is there are motherboards with such capabilities. I dont wanna make my old processor idle when upgrading with a new one. If there are motherboards with such capabilities my old one have no facilities for that.
