What is the Video Card?

When my cmputer starts up or justr at various times the screen freezes and goes garbled and looks like a multicoulored chessboard. XP says its a drawing problem with the card so I downloaded latest nVidia and Abit drivers, bought a new monitor lead, re-installed windows and lowered the peformance bar in troubleshooot to compensate but it still happens. It is a brand new system and this problem is doing my head in please can anyone help?
