I was thinking that it was something to do with my Internet settings. How can I edit this?

When I try to connect to MSN messenger, I get a message back saying, “Please make sure that you are connected to the Internet”, when I am connected. I checked my status on MSN and it said it was ok. I have no firewall in place so what is my problem I was thinking that it was something to do with my Internet settings. How can I edit this?
