Why does it say 'Bad command or file name at boot up?

Question

When the computer boots I get 'Bad command or file name'. What should I do?

Answer

This question was answered on April 17, 2003. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

Cause:

The autoexec.bat or config.sys has a line that is improperly typed or missing

Solution:

See if the computer is reporting which line is 'Bad Command or File name' This can be determined by looking closely to see if it says something similar to 'Bad Command or File name on line 8 of the config.sys' This can also be determined by doing a step by step configuration.

Once you have determined whether the error is in the autoexec.bat or config.sys edit the appropriate line and either remark the line or remove the file from the appropriate file.
