HOw do I know when I am out of ink?

I am trying to look at the print cartridges to see if they need to be changed and how to install new ones. I have Windows 2000 and it is not the same or as easy as Windows 98 to figure this out. I have tried a couple of different ways and it just wasn't working. I have an HP610c printer connected. Could you please guide me on how to work this.

Well the printer is programmed to let you know when you are low on ink or when you are out of ink.
