Why wont my system startup after it crased?

system crashed- on starting up again normal message to say windows not shut down propperly- run scan disc to check for errors- but then it says scan disk file missing or currupted and to press any key to run windows anyway! tried this but it then says that

HIMEM.SYS is missing it says to make sure its in windows directry- then it goes to C:\ prompt-

how do i find out if its in win dir?

what do i do if it is?

what do i do if it isn`t?

please help as i cant afford a new system

Your HIMEM.SYS is not in your win dir, it is in you Config.sys file When at your C:\ type dir

it should show you your Config.sys file open that and see if the HIMEM.sys file is in there, if not you will have to extract it from your copy of the OS CD that came with your system If that does not work you might have to reinstall the OS.
