What is the difference USB 1.1 and USB 2.0?

Can you explain the difference between USB 1.1 and 2.0 and are they compatible? Will I need to replace my older system or can I use the 2.0 devices on my laptop? It gets confusing trying to figure this out. Or do you know of a website I can research this on?
