How can upgrade to XP pro from ME?

i'm trying to remove an window ME os. and put window xp pro on a hard drive. formating xp on it . it tell's me that a window appalcation is running and it can't do even if i use the restore disk that came with the drive same error message.it's a quantum 20g out of a compaq. putting a pc together from a couple of old pc i had sitting around for my daughter. it all work's fine but i hate ME* unstable! i got an window's 98 os disk if that would format easier? oh yeah the hard drive just won't format anymore i just want a clean hard drive.

Try this in Win ME go to the commad prompt or Dos prompt At the C:\ type format, it then will ask you if your sure you want to erase the disk, type y It will then start to erase the hard drive To install XP make sure you change the boot sequence in the CMOS to boot from the CD first Install the XP pro CD in the CD Rom and it will take over from there it will also allow you to partition the hard drive correctly.
