Why do I have to re-install my programs every now and then when I switch on my computer.

Recently I am finding that every now and then when I switch on my computer or restart that my programs seem to be uninstalled. I click 'control panel' and 'add/remove programs' and the box is empty with no programs in it. Under the start menu, the programs are still listed but when I click on them or on the shortcuts they dont work. I have to reinstall all of them, including the display and audio discs. Also, when entering user names and passwords on websites the computer is very slow at entering what I have just typed. usually when I re-visit certain websites my user name is usually automatically filled in and i just have to enter my password, but I am finding that I have to enter my user name too. Also, I click' outlook express' and it takes quite a few minutes before it appears.

I am not running any anti virus software, but I will install Norton anti virus today to see if that helps. My daughters use msn hotmail and get a lot of junk mail but are under strict instructions to delete anything that they are not familiar with without opening. I also use Kazaa and wonder if this could have anything to do with it.
