Internet freezing

Whenever I want to connect to the internet, the computer "freezes" as soon as I turn the modem on at the power-point, and the only way to overcome this problem is by using ctrl/alt/delete and rebooting.

What causes this to happen and is there an easier way to fix the problem?

By looking at your profile the one thing that i might suggest which will help speed up your computer and internet at the same time would be up grading you ram memory to at least 128mb or higher because chances are this is what is slowing your computer down
