I would like to enhance my laptop's (Dell Inspiron 2650) speed and performace through a memory upgrade. I am currently at 128 MB and have found affordable chips to increase that by 256. My problem is that I am nervous about installing it myself, as I have never opened my laptop and know very little about what to do once I get in there.

Is installing memory relatively simple for a novice user like myself or would it be better to have it done professionally?

Thank you for your assistance.

Well that is really your call, if you are not comforatable with it than don't, it is better to have peace of mind than to worry about it whether or not you installed it correctly Besides there are alot of things you have to be aware of on the inside of your laptop, one wrong move and you can ruin your machine Let a professional do it.
