What is hardware?

My computer shuts down by itself. I have changed the power supply twice within the past year. Sometimes the shutdown occurs when I try to do something specific, such as install a program, or when the start up scandisk runs. Sometimes it occurs for seemingly no reason. Could this possibly be a hard drive problem?
