How can I find out what each process dose so I can stop if I want to?

My system is slow. I have tried several things to speed it up. I know the double monitors slow it down but, I don't believe it is the total cause of the problem. My trouble shooting has lead me to look at the Win Task Manager processes. Where can I find information on what each process does so I can descide if it need to be running or not?

If you are using a Win 9x machine you have to go to system iformation, this will show you a graph of what is going on and what is using what.
