My monitor is fixed at 16 colours

My monitor is fixed at 16 colours. I go to display box, change to 256 and move slider. It says the computer must restart but it always goes to 16 and nothing I do will seem to change it. Help would be wonderful because the colour was always excellent and is now just terrible. Thanks,

Go into the control pannel or go into the display box maby the plug and play settings were changed , or your monoter might be going bad and can't support the input from the cpu? If you can try to hook up your monoter to someone elses computer and see if it works well
