WHy can't I see my CD/DVD drive icon?

HI<i have lost my cd/dvd combi,the icon does no longer appear i have dont the look for new hardware and detection methods to find it again to no avail,it just dissapeard after watching a dvd movie and now i cant use any cd as it says please insert disc all the time,i got onto the place i bought it and they were no help whatsoever all they said was go back to system restore and c if that helps,well it never and i have no cd drive iocon anywhere on my pc,i read your instructions to a question simmilar to this but i have to say your answer was useless totally,i mean cmon"clean the cd lens?,i hope you can be more effective this timwe round as im pulling my hair and my teeth out trying to get my cd drive to be recognised in my pc again,i have even gone into safe mode and done the detect through cntrl panel and hardware profiles this did however find the icon after that but then the screen flashed and it was gone again,please please help me fix this 1000 pound sack of .... thanks loads.

Maybe you should reinstall it, that would have to bring back the icon.
