How to correct unknown hard error

starts to load windows logo then comes to blue screen saying Stop C0000218 unknown hard error, check to make sure any new hardware software properly installed ( haven't installed anything recently) - disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing and then use safe mode-dont know how to do this, it is also clicking at regular intervals as though switching itself off. tried to format the system (originally had windows xp) now am trying to load windows 2000 but same screen coming up

You can try to run last good known configuration, or try to run it in safe mode the second it boots up I would also try the xp repair disk to correct any problem or the xp installation disk to correct any problems or missing files.
