Where did my sound go

I can't here the sound on my computer anymore! Instead of seeing the voulme control icon on the entertainment slot on the start up menu i see an icon with two computers connecting together and it says direct cable connection. It tells check your cable settings,and then click listen. It then says on the bottom Host cable set up to listen on Serial Cable on COM1.I can't here any sound on the computer and when I press listen it says connection lost.What do I do?How do I restore the volume control application back in my computer?

If no volume control icon appears, that means your sound drivers are not installed Install them from cd or download them from the internet.
