How can I convert them to mp3 without transferring then to cd first?

I have a lot of wav files stored on my hard drive taking up a lot of space. How can I convert them to mp3 without transferring them to CD first? Is there a reliable software programme which will do this?

There is a program called streambox ripper that will do the .wav to .mp3 conversion for you
