How to shut down when program running.

Need to know where to look for computer shuting down when starting a program, then computer restarts and will run fine.

Has been working for approx. 6 mo.

You can go to START and click on SHUTDOWN As you mentioned you need to shut it when a program is running To do this, you need to press the "ALT- CTRL and DELETE BUTTON This will help to give you the access to end any program running or to shut dowm your computer.
