The PC has two problems, one - it cannot be switched off, two - the windows screen does not proceed beyond the blue welcome screen with the windows logo and then just continues to display this (no start icon etc.). This has started after a recent thunderstorm. I have power surge protection, also other devices operate normal.

I followed instructions on the hp website with regard to uncoupling of USB devices, other hardware and subsequently via the F8 key to reboot/ restore to previous setting etc.

Also, one advice (after calling the HP-helpdesk) was to unplug the IDE from the hard disk. I have done so to no avail.

What is the problem here (the hard disk?) and can I still salvage my data ?

Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like your computer must have been fried because of the power surge have u try taking it to a perfessional to have them open your computer and check it out to see if some of the circuits or chips have been fried or if your need to reformat your harddrive trust me best thing to do is to have a perfessional have a look at your computer you might need replacement parts
