What is a site that would shpw me excalty what I need to set up a network and provide step by step instructions?

I just purchased a new Dell desktop and would like to set up a home network with my old gateway desktop. I have a D-Link 704 P router but am very much a novice when it comes to networking. do you have or do you know of a site that would show me excatly what I need to set up a network and provide step by step instructions? I connected both computers to the router and was able to get Cox cable to fucntion on both but not the printer or the file sharing. Thanks.
