Older machine, boots to the C prompt, but Win 98 is in the D drive - hard drive partitioned to C & D, with D being the main partition.
How do I get Win 98 (D partition of hard drive) to open, when all I can get is the C prompt in DOS when I reboot the computer?

You can type win98 in the c dos prompt, this should take you to win 98.
