Just reformated hard drive and now can't get sound to work. It's an Athlon

2800XP with an Asus motherboard and an ESS Alegro sound card. The device

manager says the device is "working properly" and the correct drivers are

installed. I've tried an old set of speakers and they didn't work either.

Another consideration is that I a have USB headset "Plantronics" that works fine.

When plugging and unplugging I hear connection noice from the speakers and

hear "pops" on shutdown.

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks,

Joe

Problem with sound can be caused by a problem with the sound card itself, but they can also be a result of sytem setting, bad connections, or a number of other issues.
