What to install a 3-gb ddr stick but it doesn't want to insalll

I am attempting to install 3-1GB DDR RAM sticks. I have checked the book for the motherboard, and the board should be capable. However, the system is only registering 1.5 GB. I have checked the sticks by installing one of them into another computer I have. That system found the entire stick. I have updated the BIOS, and checked the CMOS. I don't know what else to try.
