Takes a long time to boot up Window xp want to know how to speed it up

1) Window XP Home came on the computer. It now takes a very long time to boot up for some reason. How can I speed it up again, like it used to be? 2) after a recent Internet Explorer Update, I now have to choose a user during startup before computer will finish booting up. How can I eliminate this frustrating step? Thankyou so much for your time.
