What is explorer.exe

When I click on desktop icons: my computer, my documents, recycle bin or try to access control panel I get an error saying Explorer,exe generated errors and will be closed by windows....what is wrong. I can access internet (JUNO), I can play games, I can access excel and word.

I had a similar problem and the way I corrected it was by putting the installation disk of 2000 Your explorer is missing a file You can also update explorer.
