What can I do to get my computer to detect my hard drive?

I WAS ON MY LAPTOP LAST NIGHT AND I WAS PUTTING TOGETHER A PHOTO COLLAGE, I WENT TO THE PRINT ICON AND MY COMPUTER SHUT DOWN. NOW WHEN I TURN IT ON, IT SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT CHECKING THE MEDIA CABLE AND THAT MY OPERATING SYSTEM ISN'T FOUND. I TRIED RE-INSTALLING FROM THE DISK THAT CAME WITH THE LAPTOP, BUT WHEN I DID, IT SAID THAT MY HARD DRIVE WASN'T DETECTED. WHAT CAN I DO? THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP THAT YOU CAN OFFER ME.

You did mentioned that when you turned it on it said something about checking the media cable, check the media cable, that can have something to do with your issue you are having.
