When I had Windows ME on my other PC, it was easy to remove running programs from my Startup. I now have Windows XP and I have not found a way to do it.

To remove running programs from your startup, you could try the following:
Go to Start, Run and type in msinfo32
When the window comes up, click the sign next to Software Environment and then click once on StartUp Programs
This should show you all the things starting up on the system
Go to Edit up the top and click on Select All, this should highlite the items
Go back to Edit and select Copy
Open up Notepad and goto Edit and select Paste
This should copy the list into Notepad where you can save it as a text file
