I have an IBM Aptiva from 1997, which I just brought over from Canada to France. I plugged it into the wall, without first switching the power from 115 to 230, and there was a loud BANG and then the smell of something burning. Did I blow a fuse? Can this be fixed?

Mostly you did blow a fuse, it can be fixed if there no real damage done to the hard drive, if it blow more than a chips and drives in the computer then are going to have to get that repaired.
