What is usb

i have a question about usb ports, what is meant by what does it mean by there are two power modes for a usb hub , one is self powered mode and self powered mode. the ibm computer has a usb plug in that has a three pronged pitchfork looking think and the other has nothing, is there a difference or not . thanks dennis cox

Maybe one is a firewire and the one with the pitchfork is for the usb if the two look alike there are usb port
