How can I tell if I have a virus on my pc?

When I turn my p/c on i am able to choose 2 different desk tops the one that I use all the time freezes right aftr allthe icons pop up. The other dies top has no problems. My son seems to think I have a virus. How can I tell if I cannot even get far enogut o scan????

Well by what you telling me here it sounds like you do have a virus on your pc, may I suggest that if you want your pc to be working for you, you do some serious rebooting on it, as quick as you ever can.
