What is laptop

my old compaq lte 5250 laptop, will turn on but it goes to a screen that says like memory scan and then it goes to the first screen which says windows 98 then it either says to reinstall windows and shuts off or goes to command prompt screen.. help i can not reinstall cause i have no cd drive what do i do? and i also can not check my computer cause it wont start right.. and i did press f10 but nothing is wrong ?help

What I suggest for you to is when you turn on your laptop hold down the f5 function key this will give you the option to start in safe mode were you can attempt to fix the problem If now get a ERD (emergency repair disk) and put it in the floppy drive then reboot the your system This action can also help you in finding out what is wrong with your system there may be some files missing.
