I have two computers, one upstairs, one downstairs. I have cable internet access downstairs. I have cable TV upstairs. Is it possible to just purchase another cable modem and hook it upstairs to my second computer? I don't really want to network the two together if I don't have to.

I would call your ISP and take it up with them Most likely they would charge you for your second connection

If you dont want to go that way you could create a 802.11b wireless gateway.

You can purchase a wireless PCi card (like the SMC EZ Connect 802.11b Mbps Wireless PCI Card), and a wireless cable/DSL router (like the 'Linksys BEFW11S4 EtherFast Wireless-B Access Point Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch') If the CPU is a laptop instead of the wireless PCI card you will need a wireless-b notebook adapter (like the Linksys WPC11 Wireless-B Notebook Adapter).

Connect the wireless switch to the cable modem Connect the wireless PCI card to the CPU upstairs or the wireless-b notebook adapterto the laptop Using each hardwares software bundles and drivers you will be able to connect to the internet with both CPU's I know you said you didnt want to network the CPU's but, you will also be able to get a network going this way also.
