Computer freezes?

I seem to have some sort of bug in my computer. It freezes all the time, especially when I've been using it for an extended period of time. For example, if I'm burning some CDs, or working with my music- notation program, it'll be fine for a while, then it will freeze, or sometimes even show the blue screen. When I try to use the scanner, that almost invariably crashes the computer, and so does the wave-studio program that came with my CD-burner (Aopen Just Link) A lot of the time ctl-alt-del won't even work, and I am forced to press reset, which I know is very bad. I am considering reload the entire operating system (win98se), and wiping out everything. I have to admit that I don't have any anti-virus software. Could what I have be virus related? If so, what kind of software would help?

Any helpful advise is appretiated. Go easy on me: I'm not very clever with these machines.

Thanks!

PS the processor is a 700 mhz Duron, if that is of help.

Well first have you installed a new program onto your hard drive or installed a new piece of hardware if the answer is Yes then that can be what is crashing your computer Also yes it can be a virus you should install one I myself use Norton's Antivirus Also while you are at it if you want a completely safe system install a firewall I use two firewalls on my systen (Yes you can install two) I hope that helps.
