What is a soud card?

Why won't my microphone pick up sound? I have checked the connections, they are color coded, where can I go wrong? My speakers still work. I tested with a brand new microphone and the issue persists. No error on sound card in Device Manager. I did recently update Dragon Naturally Speaking to Service Pack 1 and am persuing the issue with them as my voice activated software is useless without a mic. Many for whatever you have to offer!
