My taskbar keeps going blank or it freezes during and after startup. I'm not sure how to correct this problem and I'm afraid that I might have a virus. I'm away at college and I already tried to get it fixed using the services in the resident halls but the same thing keeps happening. Thanks a lot!

Hello, i don't think you have a virus but a bug software that keeps your computer to freeze at the startup if you go more often on the internet and download/ install software in the internet then that means that you already had a virus.

-If you suspect that you have a virus then update your antivirus, you may also update windows 98 for fix bugs.

if you don't have a virus then is a fault software that you had install and keeps your system to freeze up and could be a 32-bit program that mess up the memory address access since they share the memory Use the msconfig utility by typing at the run command, then go to the startup tab, then uncheck all of them, live one check and reboot try the same with other until you find the problem also go to the startup folder and delete any files in there, it should be in start-program-startup.
