Problem loading up new computer?

MKy girlfriend's mother recently bought a new Compaq. It is about less then 2 months old. They use it for basically etertainment. When the computer boots up there is a frequent "disk read error" in which it may take about 5 or 6 times to actually get the computer to boot up properly. They also about 3 different accounts to log into. Even after booting up, the computer still performs very slowly, even slower then my dad's old computer that has a 600 MHZ processor. My question is what is making the computer run so slowly? I ran a scandisk and that didn't help, there are no viruses on the computer, so Norton says. So any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks....

I would suggest contacting the company since it is a new computer.
