Computer freezes?

My computer is taking forever to start up. When it finally does start up it freezes for about ten seconds and is then just fine for 5 seconds. After this, it freezes up again for ten seconds and then is fine for 5 and so on and so on. What does this mean?

Try defragging your hard drive, also you might need more memory.
