Fire The Phone Company But Keep Your Number

Want to keep your home phone number, but get rid of the phone company?

It’s time for another Data Doctors Tech Tip.

If you want to fire your phone company, but are worried about the quality of calls over the internet, you should check out Ooma.com.

Ooma, spelled O O M A, is a different kind of phone service. You pay for the Ooma interface one time, it’s $180 bucks, plug it into your internet router and you’re done. Calls are free, but you do have to pay taxes of a few bucks a month.

Now you plug in your existing home phone, regular or cordless, and start calling. You don’t need any other special equipment. And, Ooma’s basic free service gives you voicemail, caller-ID, call-waiting. You can keep the number you have or get a new one.

The voice quality on Ooma is exceptional. May actually sound richer and fuller than your current home phone service.

But what about 911 calls, how will they know where I am? All Ooma units come bundled with 911 services. Help will be able to find you. And if anyone ever dials 911 from your home, you'll get a text message alert on your cell phone as well.
