Codec: is an abbreviation of 'Compressor-Decompressor', and is a piece of software that allows your computer to play video or audio compressed with the corresponding compression technology. Most codecs only allow the decompression (playing) of media, while some codecs are 'complete' and offer both the ability to play media, as well as create (compress) it. Codecs are usually an invisible part of the computing experience, until you have problems, and can quickly become some of the most frustrating problems.
